Dental Crowns and Bridges Labrador
When a tooth has been heavily restored or had root canal treatment, crowns and bridges are a good solution to rebuilding the tooth.
Many Australians aren’t aware of what a crown or bridge actually is; or better yet, the purpose they serve in dentistry.
If a tooth has already undergone a lot of restorative dental work which may include fillings, a root canal, or is just in poor condition, a dental crown and bridge services to help rebuild the tooth structure and restore its natural functionality for the long-term.
Dental Crowns
A dental crown is a dental restoration that can protect, strengthen, reshape and restructure a heavily damaged tooth. They work to restore the full, natural function of the tooth or teeth affected, and can also improve the appearance. Once the treatment is complete, your teeth will look healthy and feel stronger.
Crowns at Dentists@Labrador can be made from metal, porcelain, or a combination of both. Both of these materials are suitable solutions for damaged teeth and are extremely durable.
Generally, our team will recommend metal crowns for back teeth that are less visible and porcelain crowns for the front teeth, as the porcelain crowns can be made to match the color of your natural teeth.
What issues can dental crowns address?
Dental crowns can offer a wide range of benefits so it’s important to visit your dentist and discuss your concerns so we can identify if crowns are the most appropriate solution for you.
Typical dental concerns crowns can address may include:
- Repairing a cracked or chipped tooth
- Covering a stained and discoloured tooth
- Covering a large filling that does not have enough tooth lef
- Covering a tooth that has had root canal treatment
- Attaching a bridge
Dental Crowns Procedure
Dental crowns are custom-made to match the natural color and shape of your teeth, however, the procedure may take more than one visit to complete.
First, the affected area is numbed and the damaged tooth is prepared for the crown to be accurately placed. Your dentist will then take an impression of the prepared tooth to create the final crown.
In some cases, a temporary crown may be used to protect the tooth until the final crown is affixed, but once your dentist receive the final dental crown back, it will be secured in place with durable dental cement.
It’s important to note that this treatment is not reversible once complete.
Dental Bridges
Dental bridges are used to replace missing teeth and restore functionality allowing you to speak, bite and chew properly. They can also maintain the shape of your face and prevent other teeth from shifting out of their natural positions. This is a big cause of missing teeth or larger gaps in teeth so it’s important to address a missing tooth as soon as you can.
Dental bridges are cemented in the gaps between teeth and anchored against the neighbouring teeth for support. It is both a durable and long-lasting treatment.
Dental Bridges Procedure
Dental bridges are custom-made for your teeth and generally take more than one appointment to complete.
During your first visit, your dentist will create a custom bridge that looks and functions like your natural teeth. Your dentist will then go on to numb the affected area and prepare the surrounding teeth to support the bridge. We will then take an impression of your prepared teeth to create the final bridge.
A temporary bridge may be placed for the protection of your teeth until the final bridge is complete. Once the final bridge is ready, it will be cemented in the gap between the neighbouring teeth.
What happens if I don’t address a missing tooth?
If you leave a missing tooth or larger gap in your mouth untreated, it can result in
neighboring teeth shifting out of their natural positions and jaw deterioration. This can lead to a number of other dental problems down the line.
Leaving a missing tooth or broken tooth untreated can also risk trapping bacteria and food debris in the gap which can lead to decay in the affected tooth, and surrounding teeth as well as the potential risk of gum disease.
